ORGANISERS of a popular poetry competition held annually in memory of a Wirral teenager have announced a last minute change of venue for its awards night.
The Chris Salmon Poetry Extravaganza takes place each year in memory of the poetry-loving youngster.
The Calday Grange Grammar School student died from a rare streptococcal infection in February 2009, aged just 15.
Prize-giving was due to take place at Bromborough Civic Centre tomorrow, Friday, but a burst water pipe means the venue has been temporarily closed to allow for emergency repairs, with the awards ceremony now due to be held at Wallasey Town Hall at 7pm.
A specially-invited audience including the mayor of Wirral will be entertained with examples of poetry from the record-breaking number of entries.
More than 850 entries were received for this year’s competition, which saw primary and secondary school pupils as well as adults taking part.
The evening will include a performance by local poet Curtis Watt, with winning poets also set to perform their pieces.
Poet and former member of the Scaffold, John Gorman will also announce the overall winner of the under 18 category, who will become Wirral’s Young Poet Laureate.
Winners from each age category will receive cash prizes, and will be invited to attend a workshop with Curtis Watt.
