HOUSEHOLDERS in Wallasey will be urged to check that they have working smoke alarms during a campaign next week.

As part of home safety week, firefighters will visit around 300 properties in the area starting on Thursday, March 27.

They will carry out home fire safety checks, making sure working smoke alarms are present.

Firefighters will also visit schools in Bromborough, Upton and Birkenhead to highlight key safety messages from road safety, fire safety in the home and reducing fires from anti-social behaviour.

Paul Murphy, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service's district manager for Wirral, said: "We know and see each month the impact working smoke alarms can have in your home.

"A working smoke alarm is a vital piece of life-saving equipment for your home.

"It can give people the vital seconds they need to escape a fire.

"You are four times more likely to die in a house fire if you do not have a working smoke alarm."
