Council backs Steve Foulkes to be Wirral's mayor
Wirral’s ruling cabinet has backed former council leader Steve Foulkes to be the borough’s next mayor.
Councillor Foulkes was formally nominated to become “first citizen” for 2014/15 by council leader Phil Davies when the cabinet met at Wallasey town hall on Thursday.
The mayoral role is seen as a non-political position and includes chairing full meetings of the council as well as attending civic functions and representing the borough.
The civic honour is especially important this year as Wirral welcomes the return of the Open Golf Championship in July.
Heswall Conservative councillor Les Rowlands has been nominated as Wirral’s next deputy mayor
The nominations are subject to approval of the full council at its annual meeting.
