Rail commuters faced chaos this morning after major disruptions at Liverpool Lime Street and on the Wirral line.
Network Rail services were cancelled leading to severe delays due to over-running engineering works at Lime Street.
All lines have since reopened but trains to and from Lime Street may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.
There is no estimate for the resumption of normal services.
Wirral commuters were obliged to de-train at Birkenhead North and Central and use a replacement bus service after signalling equipment failed at James Street.
Merseyrail says this fault has been repaired and Wirral trains are running normally, although there will still be some residual delays.
