EXCLUSIVE: Benefits Street producers want new series set in Birkenhead North

Wirral Globe: Cllr Jim Crabtree and Frank Harrison with a copy of the letter this afternoon Cllr Jim Crabtree and Frank Harrison with a copy of the letter this afternoon

NOTORIOUS Channel 4 show Benefits Street - which sparked outrage when broadcast in January - has targeted residents in Birkenhead North for a potential second series.

Householders in Fairbrook Drive received letters from programme makers Love Productions inviting them to take part in the reality show.

Bidston councillor Jim Crabtree and Frank Harrison, former chairman of Birkenhead North Development Committee, said they will be advising residents to think twice before agreeing to be filmed.

Councillor Crabtree told the Globe: “We’ve been expecting this to happen, so we're not really shocked by it.

“Hopefully, people will have seen the first series and will not take part in the second.

"I’ve spoken to residents and they are not happy, fearing it will show the area in a very negative light.

“There’s hardly anyone on benefits around here. In fact a lot of people work, so it is not a welcome invitation.”

Mr Harrison, who was chairman of the community committee for five years, said: “There have been a lot of changes in the area, so the last thing we need is Benefits Street.”

In a letter to families living in Fairbrook Drive, Love Productions wrote: “We are looking for a really strong community where neighbours look out for one another, have really interesting stories to share and offer their own perspectives of living on benefits.

“We would love the opportunity to speak to everyone on the street whether you are claiming benefits or not.”

The Globe spoke to Fairbrook Drive residents, who said they would not be taking part in the programme.

One, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m not happy that we’ve been chosen and I'm opting out.

“The programme just exploits people and can leave you wide open to criticism, as happened with the first series. I don’t want to air my dirty laundry in public.“

Love Productions declined our invitation to comment.

Who Benefits?

The five-part reality series aired in January and documented the lives of residents of James Turner Street in a Birmingham suburb.

It showed benefit claimants committing crimes, including a demonstration of how to shoplift, and portrayed people dependent on welfare as lacking motivation to seek employment

The programme was extremely controversial, with police, Channel 4 and Ofcom receiving hundreds of complaints.

There were reports of Twitter death threats made against residents of the street, and Channel 4 was accused of screening "poverty porn."

Love Productions is a UK-based company behind major TV hits such as The Mary Berry Story and The Great British Bake Off - which made a star of Wallasey-born baker Paul Hollywood.

It also produced Britain's Youngest Grannies, Rock Stars' Wives, Young Mums' Mansion and Underage and Having Sex.

Magenta Living are quick enough to take rent off residents even though some are living in damp and mould filled homes with mice infestations. Magenta Living should be protecting there tenants from companies like this and NOT burying there heads in the sand.

All three councillors you mention put self interest before the wellbeing of learning disabled people when they were instructed to vote AGAINST a resolution to remove Steve Foulkes from office the other year, and DID SO.

If they'd voted to stop the abuse and stood up against the theft from vulnerable tenants' bank accounts, they would have been bullied in return by the executive... and possibly had their careers ended.

YES, that's the corrupt system for you. Run on self interest.

In other words, their YELLOW STREAKS went to the forefront, abusers were paid off £220,000, money stolen amounted to THREE QUARTERS OF A MILLION and the abusers were gagged and received clean bills of health...

.... this is what you voted for AND you're implying ANY of these councillors are "Good"???

I'm not bitter, just extremely angry that some people can be so **** callous and stupid.

Cllr Crabtree, congratulations for winning the battle with head of streetscene. The old street bin removed and a decent bin replaced on friday. the new bin put in its original resting place outside newsagents shop. I told all concerned I would pass on their thanks and well wishes to you. We are all genuinely grateful.
Kind regards
and on behalf of those concerned.

Speaks about volumes about you too. You're not very bright.... nor are you very sympathetic to the wellbeing of vulnerable people in council "care".

The council will not be happy to high light just how little they help Wirral residents at all !! the ! woodchurch estate. for one ? no nicely planted roundabouts here just pot holes and damaged greens ! If we played golf or lived in hoylake money would be made available at any cost the rich get richer and the poor don't count !!!!??
Whilst agreeing with what you say about the Council Kevin, can I just point out that there is a group of hardworking volunteers from Woodchurch who have planted out & maintained the 2 roundabouts in Woodchurch for over 3 years now.
They recently have won some Love Wirral funding to make some other areas look nicer this summer.
They will NOT be planting the empty beds at the Arrowe Park Hotel, so lets wait & see what happens there as the whole roundabout was lost to ensure freeflowing traffic for the open golf last time it was at Hoylake.

Sorry, nothing to do with this story !!

Sorry Kevin, not a clue about that. There are so many issues and speaking to our councillors gets you nowhere !!

The people of Winson Green in Birmingham who let this shower into their homes clearly regret it, it's probably why they are moving on looking for another area and it's mainly hard working residents to portray badly. I could drive them to areas in Leeds or Bradford or to the 'home of shameless, Gorton. My advice to the North End is stay clear of whatever this lot offer you, what you will get will be nothing like you are expecting...
