PUPILS and staff from New Brighton Primary School dressed as their favourite characters to celebrate World Book Day.

The festivities lasted all day long with the children writing book reviews and character descriptions and sharing their favourite stories with their classmates.

They also took part in an extreme reading photo competition this year, to help encourage budding authors.

Deputy headteacher Cathy Murphy said: "It was lovely to see the children showing such great enthusiasm for literacy and really was a truly magical day – roll on World Book Day 2015!

"Everybody put lots of time in to creating costumes so that they could become their favourite book characters.

"We were amazed at the unusual places the children found to read in, including a fridge and a wheelie bin.

"This led to a brilliant fancy dress parade, outside in the Spring sunshine, where characters including Dr Seuss’ Cat in the Hat and David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny were awarded prizes for their efforts!

"Staff got involved too, thinking carefully about their own costumes, which included The Gruffalo, Madam Hooch from Hogwarts’ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Willy Wonka with his Oompah Loompahs."
