WIRRAL Hospital has been awarded £250,000 to buy state-of-the-art technology for its registered nurses.

The cash will be used specifically to buy cutting-edge, hand-held computer equipment for nursing staff.

The money is from the Nursing Technology Fund - part of a £100m investment to improve nursing care through the purchase of new tech.

Seventy-five NHS Trusts across the country have been awarded a share of the first round of available money, totalling £30m.

Trusts applying for funding had to show how their technology projects would bring real improvements to patient care and safety.

Jill Galvani, director of nursing and midwifery at Wirral Hospital, said: “I am delighted we have been successful in this technology bid.

“This will mean our registered nurses will have access to their ‘own’ electronic device for the duration of their shift.

“Medication rounds will now be done in ‘real time,’ increasing time spent with the patient, reducing duplication and, from recent trials, reducing the overall time undertaking this one task.”

Jane Cummings, chief nursing officer for England, said: “Equipment like this simply wasn’t available as little as 20 years ago and using this kind of modern technology is part of the innovative and new ways of working we need to embrace in tackling modern health challenges.”
