Tranmere Rovers assistant manager John McMahon said the referee made the correct decision over the late postponement of Tuesday night's game against Crawley Town.

The game was called off at 6.20pm by match referee James Linington.

The Crawley Town pitch has been plagued by problems this year and the Tranmere call-off was their fifth successive postponement.

McMahon is quoted on Rovers website as saying: "When you go on to the pitch it's obviously the right decision and there's nothing we can do about it.

"They're desperate to get the game on and it's just unfortunate we're so far away.

"I think there are four or five poor areas.

"The groundsman to his credit has worked on them but there was no way we could play on that."

McMahon - in charge of first team affairs while Ronnie Moore is suspended pending an FA inquiry into a potential breach of betting rules - continued: "It's dangerous and it wouldn't be the right thing to do to put players at risk.

"We've got fantastic support away from home and it's unfortunate for them they've made the trip and the game has been called off at late notice.

"Apologies to them, but it's out of our hands."

Around 300 Rovers supporters had travelled to West Sussex.

According to the Crawley Town website, the club offered to play the game on Wednesday night, "but the offer was politely declined by Tranmere."

Crawley will now consult with Rovers to offer travelling supporters compensation.

The club apologised to all fans and sponsors for the postponement of the fixture and inconvenience caused.

Full refunds will be available to anyone who bought a ticket and cannot attend the re-scheduled game, the date for which will be notified as soon as possible.
