A WIRRAL woman has died following an “intense fire” at a house in Wallasey.

Firefighters were called to Village Way at around 4.30am today, Sunday, after smoke alarms alerted neighbours.

Six firefighters entered the property to extinguish the blaze but discovered the body of a woman in the first floor bedroom.

An investigation is now underway into the fatal fire.

Station manager Mark Thomas, who attended the call-out, said: “Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and extinguished the fire.

“Sadly, the body of a woman was found in a bedroom on the first floor.  Smoke alarms were activating when firefighters arrived.

“This was quite an intense fire and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.”

Fire appliances from Wallasey, Birkenhead and Upton attended the call-out.
