A NEW birthing suite has been opened at a Wirral hospital by two Liverpool footballers who saw their own children born there.

Reds’ stars Luis Suarez and Lucas Leiva, along with their families, officially unveiled Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital’s new Eden Suite birthing centre on Tuesday, which will provide support to women in labour in a relaxed environment.

Both Luis’ and Lucas’ children were delivered at the hospital last year, which was named as one of the top maternity units in the country by the Care Quality Commission in December 2013.

Located next to the hospital’s modern delivery suite, the Eden Suite has five calmly decorated themed room named Daisy, Poppy, Tulip, Sunflower and Bluebell.

Birthing pool facilities are available in the Sunflower and Daisy rooms and the Tulip room has a multitrac birthing chair.

The hospital also unveiled two new plaques in the Eden Suite with quotes from the players and their families thanking the staff who cared for them.

Star striker Luis Suaraz said: “I am very thankful to the staff at the hospital for delivering my son safely and taking care of my family.”

Defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva added: “It was a pleasure for me to open the Eden Suite at the hospital today. It is a way of showing my gratitude to all the staff who supported me and my family at a very important time in our lives.”

Jill Galvani, director of nursing and midwifery at Wirral University Teaching Hospital: “Having a baby is a life changing and wonderful experience, we feel privileged to be part of such a special time. We were delighted that the families of Mr Suarez and Mr Leiva chose Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital for their partners to give birth.

“Our Maternity Unit provides a personalised and tailored service for women, whether they live locally in Wirral or further afield. Today has been a great opportunity to say thank you to all our midwives for their professionalism and the wonderful support they give to women during pregnancy and birth.”
