MOTORISTS using the Kingsway Tunnel in Wallasey face 'minimal' disruption to their journeys as major resurfacing work takes place.

The work, which will be carried out over the next four months, includes resurfacing of the tunnel, the Wallasey toll booth approach areas and Liverpool approach and exit roads.

The existing concrete road deck will also be overlaid with a new waterproof layer and tarmac surface.

The work, costing £2.9m, is part of Merseytravel's 10-year programme of investment within the Mersey Tunnels.

Large goods vehicles will be prohibited from travelling through the Kingsway Tunnel to Liverpool from this Wednesday to Saturday, February 5-8, between 7.30pm and 6.30am, while resurfacing of the Wallasey Toll Plaza takes place.

The Queensway Tunnel in Birkenhead will stay open throughout the week but drivers should note that the 3.5 tonnes weight restriction remains in force.

Merseytravel said: "To allow resurfacing work to take place the Kingsway will be partially closed during four weekends in February and March, but as only one tube will be closed at a time there should be minimal disruption to tunnel users."
