A FORMER policeman has been appointed to lead Wirral Chamber of Commerce's fight against crime.

As crime reduction officer Arfon Williams will work on schemes to tackle criminal and anti-social behaviour, working closely with businesses to establish their needs around crime and safety issues.

The organisation is working to tackle crime against businesses, anti-social behaviour.

Mr Williams, who joined the Wirral Chamber team in January, has more than 27 years' experience with Merseyside Police.

He spent most of his service in the CID at divisional, major incident team, and operational levels in Liverpool and Wirral.

In his new role, Arfon will recruit businesses to join Wirral Chamber schemes such as radio watch and crime bulletins.

Reflecting on the importance of his role, Mr Williams said: "I am aware that there are no quick and easy solutions to the issues which face us all each and every day, but I believe that one of the most effective ways to reduce crime and ultimately the financial impacts of crime, is for businesses to work together if finding and initiating solutions.

"Over the coming weeks I will be introducing myself and starting to work on planning crime reduction strategies and activities with local companies, retailers and other stakeholders, such as the police and local authorities."
