VISITORS to Wirral's coastal areas are being warned to take care amid fears that gale force winds could cause a tidal surge today.

Gusts of between 40 and 50mph are expected  at around 11.15am today, and at the same time tomorrow.

The strong winds combined with high tidal levels mean Wirral is at risk of further flooding.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of gales for the North West.

A coastguard spokesman said: “Our advice to anyone thinking of going out to coastal areas would be to take care.

“There have been instances across the country where people have been carried away by the waves.

“Keep your distance when and don’t put yourself at unnecessary risk.”

A major storm surge on December 5 saw tonnes of concrete ripped from sea defence walls, while pavements, railings and road signs were torn up.

Meols, West Kirby and Hoylake promenades were all affected, but New Brighton’s redeveloped seafront suffered worst.

The damage has cost council tax payers £250,000 to repair.

Wirral’s Council cabinet approvde the expenditure from its general fund when it met earlier this month.
