TEENAGERS are being recruited to take part in test purchase operations as part of a campaign targeting Wirral traders suspected of illegally selling age-restricted products to young people.

Volunteers aged 14 to 16 are needed to check whether licensed premises are abiding by laws governing the sales of alcohol, cigarettes and fireworks.

The operations are focused on premises where traders are under suspicion of illegally selling restricted products to young people.

Cllr Brian Kenny, Wirral's cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: "We are looking for enthusiastic young people who want the chance to get some work experience, as well as learn about the licensing laws and see firsthand how Wirral Council's Trading Standards tackle the illegal sale of products like alcohol and cigarettes.

"Underage sales is an area that we know the public are really concerned about, linking as it does to such problems as anti-social behaviour and public health."

Volunteers will receive full training in what they need to say and do, and will be accompanied by an officer from Trading Standards at all times.

All officers have been the subject of enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks. Parental / guardian consent is required prior to taking part.

To register your interest to volunteer during occasional school holidays, evenings or weekends, email tradingstandards@wirral.gov.uk or telephone 0151 691 8366.
