Manager Ronnie Moore ripped into his players after Tranmere Rovers’ 1-2 defeat by Rotherham at Prenton Park.

After some fans had told Moore to “sod off” as he sat in the dugout, the furious manager described his squad’s performance as “abysmal.”

Andy Robinson's late goal wasn't enough for Tranmere as a goal either side of half-time from Alex Revell earned the visitors the points.

Rovers could have conceded several more had it not been for efforts by keeper Owain Fon Williams.

In his post-match interview, Moore said: "We were second best all over the park tonight.

"They've let me down and [let down] the supporters more than that.

"I've had one or two supporters come down to the dugout and tell me to sod off, but if I'd paid my money and seen what was going out on out there I'd be saying the same thing.

"That's the first time in my career where a spectator has had a pop. When you put a team out there and they play like that there's only one man who takes the blame for it.

“I thought we were abysmal. I'm disappointed in the commitment and desire.

“We played for five minutes right at the end, it's not good enough.

"I picked the team and put them out there and you expect them to run about and show some desire.

"But nearly every one of them has given the ball away. If you can't pass the ball to each other you're going to be in big trouble.

"We never kept the ball. When we got it we gave it straight back.”

The manager made one change to the team that beat Crewe on Saturday with James Wallace returning from suspension in place of Jason Koumas.

After a slow start , Rotherham had the ball in the Tranmere net in the 11th minute, but Wes Thomas was ruled offside from Ben Pringle's cross and the game remained goalless.

The visitors' pressure paid off on 39 minutes. Fon Williams palmed a long range effort from Lee Frecklington behind for a corner which he punched clear of the area. However the ball was quickly played to Thomas who raced into the area and squared for Alex Revell to fire in from 12 yards.

It should have been 0-2 in the first minute of the second-half, but after Revell turned Pringle's left wing cross across the six yard box Thomas side footed wide from right in front of goal.

On 64 minutes, Rotherham doubled their lead.

A long ball forward from Arnason bounced into the path of Thomas and though Fon Williams did well to save his shot, the ball went out of the area to Revell who drilled a shot past three Tranmere players into the roof of the net from 20 yards.

Substitute Andy Robinson headed Rovers back into the game when he netted from close range after Taylor headed a Koumas corner against the bar.

And there was almost an equaliser when Wallace headed another corner goalwards but Collin pushed the ball away to safety deep in added time.

Rovers are now 18th in the League One table. They travel south to face tenth-placed MK Dons this Saturday.
