PUBLIC tennis courts in Birkenhead are set to undergo a major refurbishment.

The courts in the upper part of Birkenhead Park will be resurfaced and new fencing installed around the perimeter of the courts and between the courts.

The new improved facility will not only meet Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) guidelines but will also provide four new mini tennis courts for younger players alongside six full size ones.

The works will mean the courts will be closed from Monday, February 3, for approximately three months while the refurbishment is carried out, and there will be temporary footpath closures to access paths.

Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral's cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, said: "In effect, this is the final phase of the multi-million pound transformation of Birkenhead Park that has taken place over the past decade.

"The tennis courts are extremely popular with local people and for many young people especially - this is where they get their first experience on a real court thanks to the free sessions that are offered here.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to regular users, but they can be assured that the work will be carried out quickly and the end result will be courts improved to LTA standards and a much better surrounding environment."
