SKIPTON Building Society is to shutdown four of its branches across Wirral.

The four - at Moreton, Bebington, Bromborough and Greasby - will close their doors on April 17.

The decision follows a review of the business.

Moreton councillor Chirs Blakeley is asking the company to think again.

In a letter to head office, Cllr Blakeley, who is also a customer, said he was "extremely disappointed" by the decision.

He said: "When the Halifax announced it was closing its entire nine agency branches in Wirral back in 2010, which of course included Moreton, many people, particularly the elderly and less mobile people were left isolated.

"I was really pleased when Skipton Building Society picked up the baton and took over in Moreton and to show my support I had no hesitation in transferring my Halifax account to the Skipton.

"Sadly now by closing the Moreton branch office Skipton has left those same vulnerable, elderly and less mobile people isolated - just as the Halifax did."

He added: "I truly believe local services should be provided for local people and thought Skipton Building Society held the same beliefs; clearly I was mistaken.

"If  Skipton really are as they proclaim on their letterhead ‘MY Building Society’ then they should reconsider this ill-thought out decision and maintain a presence in Moreton."

A spokesman for Skipton said: "We have decided to close four agency branches on April 17 this year, after our continual branch quality review process highlighted that they lacked demand with limited future potential, and were uneconomical to run.

"We have written to our customers at the affected agency branches at Bebington, Bromborough, Greasby and Moreton to let them know and they will continue to be well served by other agency branches in the locality, including Neston, Heswall, West Kirby and Chester.

"We have also notified the teams working at those agency branches and are working with them to look at potential alternative opportunities working elsewhere in the society."
