Wirral Globe: Two arrested in connection with break-in at Rock Ferry newsagents Two arrested in connection with break-in at Rock Ferry newsagents

TWO men have been arrested in connection with a break-in at a shop in Rock Ferry.

The men, aged 23 and 25, and both from the Anfield and Walton areas of Liverpool, were arrested by police called to reports of a burglary at Burnells newsagents in Bedford Road at 2.30am.

A silver Ford Focus left the scene when police arrived. It was found abandoned having crashed in Green Lane in Tranmere a short time later.

Police searched the surrounding area and arrested the suspects in a carpark behind the court building.

A search of the Focus led to a large number of cigarettes being found inside the car which had been reported missing by the shop owner.

The offenders are believed to have forced open the metal shutters at the front of the shop and broken the glass window behind it.

Crime scene investigators have attended the shop this morning to carrying out forensic examinations of the scene.

Detectives are viewing CCTV from the shop and surrounding area and will be questioning the two men later today about this break-in, plus two others that happened at 1.45am and 2.20am also in the New Chester Road area.

Detective Chief Inspector Tracy Hayes from Wirral CID, said: "This was excellent work by all the police officers who dealt with the incident last night.

"Thanks to a prompt call from the shop owner, who had been woken by the store's security alarm, patrols were deployed very quickly to the scene and the suspects found a few minutes later.

"What is particulary pleasing is that a large amount of cigarettes, which we believe were stolen in this burglary. were recovered at the scene.

"Tackling burglaries and robberies is a force priority and I would continue to encourage people to protect their homes and businesses and call the police if they ever see anything suspicious in their area."
