MASKED armed robbers threatened a shop worker with a screwdriver and knife before escaping with cash during a raid on a Wallasey convenience store.

The terrifying incident happened at 7.25pm last night at Costcutter on Poulton Road.

Between four and five men – armed with what is believed to have been a screwdriver and two knives – threatened a man working there before escaping with a quantity of cash.

They then fled the scene towards Brentwood Street and are believed to have got into either a silver or blue Ford Mondeo which was waiting nearby.

The men – who spoke with local accents – are described as wearing black clothing with their faces covered.

Crime scene investigators have examined the scene and have conducted house-to-house inquiries.

CCTV from the shop and the surrounding area is also being located and reviewed.

Detective Inspector Rachel Wilson, from Wirral CID, said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the member of staff which has understandably left him distressed.

"There was also a number of customers in the shop who had to witness the incident.

"It happened during a busy time of the evening and I would appeal to anyone with information who hasn't already spoken to us to get in touch.

"I'd also ask anyone who may have seen the car believed to be involved in the incident to contact us.  We think it was a blue or silver Ford Mondeo which had some damage to its rear passenger side window."

Anyone with information can call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
