Rovers boss wants players to show 'more guts'
Updated 11:58am Monday 13th January 2014 in News
ROVERS boss Ronnie Moore said he wants to see "more guts" from his players after a first-half-performance against Walsall which the manager blasted as "unacceptable."
Cole Stockton's second league goal of the season saw Tranmere come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw.
Rovers conceded early in the first-half, but substitute Stockton equalised with a powerful strike midway through the second.
Moore made two changes to the team that started against Wolves.
New loan signing Matthew Kennedy started on the right wing with Kris Peterson having returned to Liverpool, while James Rowe replaced the suspended James Wallace in midfield.
Tranmere pressed for a winner late on but they were unable to create a clear opening and had to settle for a point.
It took until the ninth minute for the first shot of the game.
Ronnie said was pleased to see his side pick up a point after a first-half performance he said was "unacceptable."
In his post-match interview, the manager said: "We can't have what we had in the first-half.
“In the position we're in we need some guts, a bit of determination and some fight and that wasn't there in the first-half.
“They get paid for running about, they're not extras or bonuses. We had words at half time and gave them ten minutes then changed it and went 4-4-2 and the two lads who came on changed it.
“We had a 20-minute spell where it would have been nice to have gone on but on play a draw was probably the fair result.
"We're not good enough to give teams 45 minutes’ head start but then we showed a bit of grit and determination.
"But we've got to set the tempo. The first-half was totally unacceptable and they've been told.”
He added: "Cole has dug deep, it was a great turn and he does thump them when he hits them.”
The result left Rovers in 20th position in the league, one place away from the relegation zone.
Tranmere are away to sixth-placed Peterborough Utd this Saturday. Kick off at the London Road Stadium will be 3pm. For ticket details see Rovers’ website: tranmererovers.co.uk
