THE police watchdog is to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in New Ferry.

Merseyside Police referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission after the body of 54-year-old Pete Leay was found at a house in Egerton Road at 5:45am on Boxing Day.

A police spokesman said there had been contact with the man in the hours before his death.

Two men aged 28 and 30, were arrested and questioned by detectives. They have both been bailed.

A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the results withheld pending toxicology reports.

The man has been identified and his next of kin have been informed.

The police spokesman added: "An investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is ongoing and the death continues to be treated as unexplained."

Mr Leay was guitarist with the Wirral band “Buster” who enjoyed success in the 1970s.

Dozens of loving tributes have been paid to Mr Leay on social media websites after his friends were informed of his death via Facebook.

Glyn Thomas wrote: “Sorry to hear such sad news. Gave me my first guitar lesson and my first ever gig. Gods taken a goodin. Love and respect to your wife and children.”

Cathy Hignett said: “Oh my god. I’m in shock. I’ve followed Buster since my teens. Pete was such a talented guy, what a voice, a brilliant guitarist. The music world has lost a fantastic man.

Shane Phoenix Bryan said: “Sleep tight Pete, a pleasure to have known you, gained your wings far too early” and Anthony Cross wrote: “Awful sad news, rest in peace mate you will be missed but not forgotten. My thoughts with Donna and all family.”
