PUPILS from a Wirral Primary school put on their Christmas jumpers and raised hundreds of pounds for a specialist unit dedicated to looking after newborn babies.

Children from Irby Primary School's School Council decided to use their Christmas appeal to support Arrowe Park Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.

The school raised £200 through their sponsored 'Christmas jumper' day, with all staff and pupils taking part.

Michelle Houghton, Irby Primary School's charity co-ordinator said: "Irby Primary School Council is made up from two children in each class. They are dedicated to school life and supporting local charities.

"The children decided they wanted to support a local charity for Christmas and subsequently chose Arrowe Park hospital Special Care Baby Unit.

"They asked the staff and children to wear a Christmas jumper for the day and donate £1 to the charity.

"In total they raised £200 which is a fantastic amount for a small school."
