Wirral maternity unit 'best in North West'

Wirral Globe: Wirral women and children's hospital Wirral women and children's hospital

Maternity services at a Wirral Hospital have been hailed as the best in the north west and among the best in the country.

Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital was awarded the accolade followed an investigation by the Care Quality Commission into women’s experiences of maternity care in England earlier this year.

More than 23,000 new mums were asked their opinions about three key areas covered – antenatal care, care during labour and birth and post-natal care.

Jill Galvani, director of nursing and midwifery at Wirral University Teaching Hospital said: “To be named as one of the top seven maternity units in England and the best in the north west by our health regulator is a tremendous achievement.

“Our hardworking staff takes great pride in the personalised and high quality service we provide for our mothers, their partners and their babies.

“We are delighted that the mothers who use our service rate us to highly.”

Almost 140 eligible NHS trusts took part in the CQC survey on maternity care.

Patients were asked a series of questions ranging from ‘dignity and respect’ to ‘kindness and understanding.’

The data provided the health regulator with information to indicate which hospitals were performing better, worse of about the same.

So in July the AMU at Arrowe Park was given a negative rating by NHS England and in December the same year the CQC says it is the best in the North West and amongst the best in the country.

I have never had an issue whenever I have needed treatment at APH and the maternity care my wife received was excellent but I have to ask who are the ones to believe here as I don't believe the standards are so apart in different parts of the hospital .

Well done to all the staff across the hospital.

Good for Arrowe but it is interesting if you look at the report itself. Across England 8000 women in total were asked for their views on maternity services. 99% said access was poor, 90% said units were not clean, 89% didn't like the food and 88% said there was no continuity of care. I think Arrowe maybe the best of a bad bunch.

Also not sure how Wirral were best in northwest. There are 3 scores hospitals are measured on. For one of them its about Labour and Birth. Liverpool Women's and the Countess of Chester scored higher. This seems to the most important measure. Not sure if these stats across the board stand up and it would be nice if the Globe would give us the full story.
