Students at a Wirral school have harnessed their creative talents to bring Yuletide cheer to a town’s senior citizens.

Year 7 students at Weatherhead High School, Wallasey have created 250 beautifully packaged Christmas parcels to deliver to local elderly residents featuring hand-made cards and a selection of gifts created and donated by the wider school community.

In addition they have written special poems about their understanding of the meaning of Christmas and created hand-made Christmas decorations and truffles add a further festive touch.

The parcels will be delivered during the last week of school term by the students to 5 local Wallasey Care Homes.

The students wanted to develop a charity initiative that supported the local community. They were keen on an inter-generational approach - recognising that many elderly people have no family or rarely have a young person to visit.

The students were also keen to recycle items and invited the school community to donate unused items or gifts, along with wrapping paper and Christmas cards to create festive packaging and handmade messages for over 200 residents from Wallasey’s elderly care and nursing homes.

Students spent their lunchtimes creating handmade Christmas decorations, wrapping gifts and writing festive messages.

Cookery Club students have created festive treats; and religious studies staff helped students create poems and verses about the meaning of Christmas Charity Captains representing the year group will deliver the festive packages to the elderly care homes.

A school spokesman said: “Our charity captains have driven this through from an idea into a heart-warming inter-generational initiative. The real heart-warmer here is the sharing of time and thoughts rather than money to restore a true meaning to Christmas in our local community. “
