Kind-hearted pupils from a Wirral Primary school have raised almost two thousand pounds for charity.

Students and staff from Raeburn Primary School, Bromborough, were already planning to raise funds for Children in Need, when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines and inspired them to re-double their efforts to fundraise for that appeal as well.

The school organised a range of fund-raising activities, including pupils coming to school decorated with spots, taking part in sponsored dancing at school discos, running a cake sale and even donating their own pocket and birthday money.

The cash poured in – and to date the school has raised over £1600 for the Philippines appeal, and £330 for Children in Need.

Edna Lester, headteacher, said: “I am so proud of the way our children, staff and families are always so quick to think of others – and to act. We have long standing associations with, and support for, local charities such as the Charles Thompson Mission in Birkenhead, and for international ones like the Pegasus Trust which helps street children in South Africa.

"The fact that there was such an overwhelming response to a natural disaster is just incredible and makes me even more proud of my school.”

Councillor Tony Smith, cabinet member for children and family services, said: “These children have shown a fantastic attitude with their charitable activities, and raised a considerable sum of money for a disaster-hit region.

"Hopefully they will be able to raise even more funds before the appeal is complete. I'd like to say a huge congratulations to everyone involved.”
