A GROUP of kind-hearted volunteers armed themselves with plastic bags and grabbers this weekend as they helped to clean up New Brighton Promenade after it was hit by severe storms last week.

More than 60 people attended the clean up on Saturday - organised by the New Brighteners – removing 70 bags of rubbish away from the popular spot, which had been strewn with litter and debris following Thursday’s tidal surge.

Paul Roberts, of The New Brighteners, said: “We had a great turnout on Saturday and many returned on Sunday to carry on with the clean up – there was a real sense of community spirit.

“We have been organised clean ups once a month for about four or five years now.

“We’re usually done for winter but we couldn’t just walk past the promenade and leave those tens of thousands of polystyrene cartons and litter just lying there and in the end, we ran out of bags.”

Another clean up will be taking place this Saturday. Anyone who is interested in taking part should meet at the lifeguard station at the bottom of Victoria Road from 10.30am.
