STAFF are currently trapped in a West Kirby restaurant after high tides left them surrounded by water.

Tanskey's, on West Kirby Promenade, contacted the Globe after six members of staff became stuck inside at around 10.45am.

Following the high tide, water levels began to rise, leaving what staff describe as ‘shoulder height’ water outside and a centimetre of water inside the premises.

Michelle Woolway, who works at Tanskey's, said: “We’ve been stranded here for over an hour. The tide is on its way back out now but it is going to be a few hours before it has cleared.

“The lifeboat has been out to check that we are ok.

“We back onto Coronation Gardens and it is completely flooded.

“The cast iron benches outside, which are concreted into the ground, are floating past.

“A Volvo estate floated past earlier.”

Hannah Watson, manager at Tanskey's said: “We get high tides four times a year but once every four year it gets high high. It’s particulary rare to be like this.

“We don’t know whether to be excited or scared.

“There are wheelie bins, benches, rubbish, cars floating past.

“I’m just concerned that they’re banging on the windows and are going to come through.”

Photographs sent to the Globe also show severe flooding in other parts of Wirral, including New Brighton, although Merseyside Police have confirmed that there have been no evacuations.

Dantealighieri says...

Hopefully the newly erected lighthouse, visible from Tanskeys, will prevent any ships running aground on the promenade.
