CHRISTMAS festivals and fairs will take place across Wirral this weekend.

The festive lights will be switched on during an event in Irby Village on Friday night.

From 5pm, many shops and businesses will remain open. There will be a barbeque, children’s treasure hunt and "Santa's sleigh" traction engine rides.

Irby Evangelical Church will host a selection of craft stalls, Irby library will be open for seasonal refreshments and Irby Dance Studio will be offering face painting and indoor dance displays.

Irby Methodist Church’s Christmas fair will also be open. There will be a charity raffle in aid of Stanley School.

Father Christmas is due to arrive by motorcycle at 6pm with the countdown and lights switch on soon after.

Irby Club will provide a children's Grotto and later in the evening, there will be live entertainment in both the Shippons Inn and Irby Club.

Hoylake's famous Christmas Tree Festival opens on Friday with a lights switch-on in the town.

Featuring a record 40 decorated trees, the festive three-day celebration will be launched at 7.30pm with a Christmas concert at St Hildeburgh church in Stanley Road.

Over Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8, there will be four visits from Father Christmas and children's activities including face-painting to cake-decorating; plus a bustling Christmas market offering festive gifts, decorations and much more.

Live music throughout the festival will include performances by Holy Trinity School choir, Anamal Dance Company and Choir, Hoylake Choral Society and St Hildeburgh's organist, Stephen Claus.

The festival will close with a traditional candlelit Christingle service at 4pm on Sunday.

Festival proceeds will be shared between St Hildeburgh’s and a number of charities.

A fair and 'grotto will be held at Heswall Day Centre on Saturday, December 7.

Taking place at the venue in Telegraph Road, it runs from 11am - 3pm.

Father Christmas has promised to visit with his elves.

Other attractions include a 'mega' Christmas raffle, hamper, cakes and sweets stall, children's games, bric-a-brac, tombola, book stall, face painting, crafts, hot food and drinks and free car parking at the centre.
