ENTERPRISING brothers Richard and James Wright have struck a blow against dog fouling in their local park by posting notices shaming owners who refuse to clean up their pets' dirt.

The two boys – Richard, 7, and James, 5 - decided to act because of the disgusting mess they faced cycling each day through Torrington Gardens in Thingwall on their way to school.

They produced hand-written notices outlining the affect that dog mess was having on local people and erected them in the park.

Richard said: "We’re so fed up of dog mess. People leave it on the grass, on the pavement and even leave bags of dog muck hanging on trees. It's disgusting and shameful!

"Our bike wheels get covered in mess and our Mum is always washing it off our trousers. We decided to put up the notices to try and get people to clean mess up and take the bags home with them or put them in the nearest bin."

The brothers initiative was drawn to the attention of housing combine Magenta Living through their environmental team operating in the area.

The company decided to back the boys’ efforts to keep dog fouling in check in the Thingwall area.

Maureen Davies, Magenta Living environmental services manager said: "Magenta Living is working alongside Wirral Borough Council to tackle dog fouling across our neighbourhoods and public spaces.

"In Torrington Gardens we have erected a free dog waste dispenser unit that is looked after by local residents.

"We have also installed additional waste bins and put up anti dog fouling signs.

"We hope that when people read this and understand the impact that dog fouling is having on people of all ages, they will follow the boys' lead and look after communal areas and encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs.

"Thanks to the support of local residents like Richard and James, we can all work together to stop dog fouling across Wirral."

Magenta Living has also been involved with Lairdside Communities Together to raise awareness of dog fouling by visiting local schools and youth clubs, holding poster competitions, providing free poop scoop bags and advice to residents.

Residents who suffer dog fouling problems in their neighbourhood should ring Wirral Council – 0151 606 2004 or use their online service – comments@wirral.gov.uk.
