AN exhibition commemorating the First World War opens at Birkenhead Park Visitors Centre today.
Organised by The Merseyside Branch of the Western Front Association, it will be opened by the mayor, Cllr Dave Mitchell at 12.30pm.
It will then be open from 10am–4pm until next Saturday, November 9.
The aim of the exhibition is not to glorify that war, but to serve as a reminder of the different aspects of that conflict.
Topics covered in the display include the war at sea, the war in the air, local casualties, local award winners, war memorials and the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to name but a few.
It will also help people research their ancestors who served in that war and find out the conflicts they went through and let people know about our association.
The Western Front Association was established in 1980, with the aim of furthering interest in the Great War of 1914-18.
The Merseyside branch's Birkenhead-based chairman Peter Threlfall told the Globe: "About 12 months ago I had an idea for some sort of exhibition commemorating the First World War and mentioned it to my members.
"They tackled the project with gusto and it's thanks to their hardwork and dedication that it's come to fruition."
