Four weeks until Wirral hospice lights switch-on
THERE are just over four weeks to go until this year's Light Up A Life switch-on for Wirral Hospice St John's.
The Globe-backed campaign, now in its 19th year, raises much-needed funds for the Clatterbridge-based hospice, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary.
It culminates in a switch-on ceremony at the venue on Sunday, December 1, which stars 5.30pm. Turning the 6000 lights on will be Upton brothers Tomas, aged six, and 11-year-old Louie Stiles.
They are doing so in memory of dad Rich, who died at the hospice in September last year months after being diagnosed with Pseudomyotonia Peritonis, a tumour affecting the stomach.
In a letter accompanying campaign leaflets for this year's appeal, Tomas appealed for the public to support this year's appeal.
He wrote: "I am really excited about turning the Christmas lights on for my dad with my brother Louie.
"We miss are dad lots and lots because he made us laugh and brought us lots of sweets and new trainers.
"Are memories of are dad are that he was really hardworking with his digger and wagon, so we could go on nice holidays with him and mum.
"We all loved going in are caravan and on bike rides. Please light up a life for my daddy."
More than two thousand people watched last year's switch-on, which raised £90,000 for hospice running costs.
The lights are sponsored in the names of lost loved ones and will remain lit until twelfth night in January.
There will also be a special carol service at St James Church in New Brighton on Wednesday, December 4. Tickets for this will be available in November.
This year, the names of all those remembered will feature in a special keepsake order of service that will be available on the night of the December 1 switch-on.
The names of those honoured will feature in special books that will be on view from 5-7pm daily until Friday, December 6.
