Wirral MP joins campaign against scam mail
2:32pm Friday 1st November 2013 in News
WIRRAL West MP Esther McVey is urging constituents not to throw away their spam mail but to hand it in as part of a campaign to stop vulnerable people spending their life savings on scams.
The minister for employment is supporting a campaign by Conservative MPs, who are working with Trading Standards to end the practice.
She wants to collect mail from concerned residents and is urging other MPs to help protect their vulnerable residents
Ms McVey said: "Everything possible should be done to end the misery caused by the spam mail that is sent to peoples' homes claiming they have won a holiday or a large sum of cash.
"I would like my constituents to make me aware of any scam mail they receive so that we can make the authorities aware and prevent other people from being ripped off.
"I am happy to be working with other Conservative MPs on this initiative and I hope that we will be able to stop the misery that this type of mail can cause to people.
"Often the most vulnerable and elderly are targeted and people are spending their savings on these scams and we must put an end to it.
"I am delighted that Asda at Arrowe Park has agreed to act as a point of contact for people to drop their unwanted scam mail off."
The campaign wants to end the scams that have seen people pay sums of between £200 to more than £100,000 after being duped into thinking they have won something.
Meetings have been held with Royal Mail and Trading Standards.
Constituents can drop their scam mail off at Asda's store in Arrowe Park. The box is situated at the branch's community notice board.
Alternatively residents can drop off scam mail at Esther's constituency office in Hoylake Community Centre, Hoyle Road, CH47 3AG. This campaign will last until the end of the year.
