EQUIPMENT used by soldiers during the First World War is on display at a Wirral museum.
An original entrenching tool that was used to start the long back breaking process of trench digging and a replica of the iconic Enfield rifle are among more than 20 items on view at the Wilfred Owen Story in Argyle Street, Birkenhead.
Also on show are a genuine field stretcher and an unused standard issue first aid kit.
The museum's curator Dean Johnson said: "Our permanent exhibition focuses on the words and life of Wilfred Owen and especially his time spent in Birkenhead but these artefacts do help to illustrate the brutality of War that Owen was so opposed to.
"Next year marks the centenary of the start of the Great War and we have a lot of schools coming to see the exhibition.
"They want to get a feel of what the soldiers went through and they conditions they had to endure.
"I hope these relics will paint that a picture of what life was like for them."
The Wilfred Owen Story - the country's first permanent tribute to the wartime poet - was officially opened in 2011.
It commemorates the work of the late WWI soldier and tells the story of his earlier years on the borough. Owen was tragically killed a week before Armistice Day.
