Wirral betting shop staff threatened during attempted robbery
10:22am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in News
STAFF at a Wirral betting shop were threatened with what is believed to be a handgun during an attempted armed robbery.
At about 6.25pm on Saturday, October 26, a man entered Bernard Murphy Racing Bookmakers on King Street in Wallasey. He approached the counter, threatened staff and demanded cash.
When staff refused, he smashed one of the counter windows with the weapon before leaving the premises empty-handed.
He ran from store on foot in the direction of Union Street believed to be in the company of another person.
Police attended and searched the area. Enquiries are on-going in the area.
No-one was injured during the incident although staff were left shaken following their ordeal.
The man wanted by police is described as white, approximately 6ft tall. He wore dark coloured clothing and his face was covered.
Detective Inspector Mark Tivendale said: "We are looking at potential links between this offence and a similar one at Betfred Bookmakers, Liscard on October 18 and have dedicated CID Officers dealing with both matters.
"We are currently studying CCTV and working extremely hard to catch those responsible.
"We recognise the serious impact robberies can have, especially for businesses.
"I'd like to reassure bookmakers and local businesses, Wirral's dedicated CID staff are working hard to trace those responsible for these offences to bring them to justice.
"It is possible that the suspects may have been in and out of the store to have a look at the set-up in the hours or days leading up to the incidents.
"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour near to these stores at around these times or anyone with information that may assist our investigation to contact us.
"I would also urge store owners and management to be vigilant. Make sure your CCTV systems are fully operational and that there are enough staff on at the right times, particularly closing time.
"If owners are looking for more general security advice, they shouldn't hesitate to contact Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265."
