Sheena's Wheels raise thousands from Wirral Race For Life

GENEROUS staff and parents from a Wirral special needs school raised more than £4,000 by taking part in the Race For Life after its headteacher was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Teachers, parents, teaching assistants and family and friends, from Hayfield School in Upton, pulled together to form a 39-strong team to take part in the Wirral Race for Life, in support of head teacher Sheena Drake, who was diagnosed last December.
The team, calling themselves Sheena’s Wheels, completed the 5k event in July at Birkenhead Park, raising vital funds for the charity.
Teaching assistant Freda Miller, who organised the Race for Life team, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the final amount. It's far exceeded our expectations.
"We all had such a great day; the atmosphere was brilliant and very poignant as Sheena came down to cheer us on.
"Thankfully she is doing really well and we’re all hoping she’ll be back at the school after Christmas.
"Sheena has taken part in Race for Life religiously for years, so it was really lovely to be able to do it in her honour.
"But we're already planning next year's event when hopefully she’ll be running along with us."
Laura Taylor, event manager for Wirral Race for Life, said: "We're extremely grateful for everyone’s support, at Hayfield, whether they took part in the event, or sponsored a friend, colleague or loved one.
"Wirral Race for Life had 3444 participants; so far we have raised £66,874 and are aiming to raise £175,000.
“So we are asking everyone who took part in Wirral Race for Life to return the money they’ve raised so it can go into vital research to help more men, women and children in the region to survive cancer."
She added: "Cancer Research UK doesn’t receive any government funding for its research, so every step towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated.
"So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque."
