5:00pm Monday 14th October 2013 in News
MORE than 2,300 people took part in the Wirral Half Marathon on Sunday.
Runners made their way from the grand archway at Birkenhead Park to New Brighton promenade in aid of local charities.
Organised by BTR Liverpool, the event attracted entrants from Spain, Denmark and Norway.
Race winner was Martin Swensson, from Penny Lane Striders, who crossed the finish line in one hour, 13 minutes and 11 seconds.
First woman over the line was Jenny Clague in one hour, 24 minutes and 23 seconds.
Race organiser Alan Rothwell said: "It went brilliantly and there was a great turnout, despite the weather.
"There was a good contingent of charity runners, as well as those taking part for fun.
"We had a surge of interest from people who had taken part in the Chester marathon and wanted to run in the Wirral event."
A number of roads along the route were closed to allow safe operation of the event.
The council said full details of the planned road closures, plus other details about the races, were been communicated to local residents.
