Thousands ready for Wirral Half Marathon
9:00am Saturday 12th October 2013 in News
THE Wirral Half Marathon takes place today.
Around 2,500 people have signed up for the event, which starts in Birkenhead Park at 9.30am and ends in New Brighton.
Runners will make their way to Egremont Promenade from the Grand
Archway at Conway Street before heading off along Vittoria Street, Corporation Road, Tower Road and Birkenhead Road.
The race finishes on Coastal Drive in New Brighton with just King's Parade being closed, from after the Clown roundabout as far as Harrison Drive, whilst the race is in progress.
Access to Marine Point Retail Park is unaffected.
Those taking part will be raising money for charities.
Roads along the route will be closed to allow safe operation of the event, starting at around 6am in the morning, with some closures remaining in place until about 2pm.
The council say full details of the planned road closures, plus other details about the races, have been communicated to local residents.
Road traffic signals and other signs are in place to remind people about what is happening.
Birkenhead Road will be closed in one direction only with residents or business access / egress possible via Kelvin Road or Dock Road heading toward the Egremont Ferry.
Access to Borough Road East is unaffected although the use of Birkenhead Road toward Four Bridges will not be possible after 8am due to the deployment of event traffic management.
There is no restriction to Marine Point access at any time from Rowson Street or Atherton Street.
Access to Marine Point from Harrison Drive will be via Grove Road and Warren Drive whilst the race is in progress due to the closure of King’s Parade.
A diversionary route will be signed and in place. The times of the road closures are approximate and based on the safe delivery of the event.
A council spokesman said times may be affected by the flow of runners and their safety takes priority although every effort will be made to reopen all roads at the earliest possible opportunity.
