Wirral Navy reservist wants you as a new recruit
8:00am Sunday 22nd September 2013 in News
A ROYAL Navy reservist from Wirral is backing a campaign to encourage more people to sign up.
Chris Sampson-Jones is giving his support to the scheme, which aims to sign up around 150 new recruits in the region over the next three years.
He will be attending a Royal Naval Reserve Live event at HMS Eaglet in Liverpool this Saturday, September 28.
Visitors will have a chance to find out about life in the navy by meeting serving reservists and taking part in physical and mental challenges.
Chris, 27, from Birkenhead, works full-time as an exchange co-ordinator at the University of Chester but is a trainee officer with the Royal Naval Reserve in his spare time.
He joined the Royal Naval Reserve last year and has already been accepted onto the two-year officer training course.
He said: "It's worlds apart from my day job but that’s what appealed to me. I spend most of my time at work behind a desk in an office, occasionally going to meetings in different parts of the university.
"The students I deal with in my day job taking part in exchange programmes to places as far as Central and South America and the Far East, so I do get exposed to a lot of different cultures.
"When you hear about some of the far-flung places that the students are going to, you want to be getting those experiences as well.
"What I do with the navy gets me out and about, and gets a bit of colour in my cheeks."
Chris is one of more than 2,300 people serving as Reservists in the Royal Navy alongside their normal day job.
Most have no previous military experience.
