Five bailed following discovery of improvised explosive in Bidston
12:05pm Monday 16th September 2013 in News
FIVE people have been bailed pending further inquiries after an improvised explosive device was found outside flats in Bidston.
Police were called to a flat in Bude Close on the Beechwood estate at around 1pm on Thursday.
A resident reported he had found the device by his front door at around 9am.
A large cordon was placed around the block of flats and surrounding roads as a precaution, and a number of properties were evacuated, while specialist officers from the force's Matrix unit carried out an assessment of the device.
Officers from the Ministry of Defence's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit then attended the scene and at approximately 5.15pm, a controlled explosion was carried out by them.
Once the device had been made safe the cordon was reduced and currently only four properties within the block of flats remained sealed off while detectives and crime scene investigators continued their enquiries.
The investigation is in its very early stages and detectives are keeping an open mind as to a motive.
However, officers are treating the incident as a targeted attack and are investigating whether it is part of an ongoing dispute between several parties.
Detectives are continuing to appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything in the Bude Close area overnight on Wednesday going into Thursday morning to call them on 0151 777 2264 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
