Duke of Edinburgh Award joy for Wirral Autistic Society
3:23pm Monday 2nd September 2013 in News
WIRRAL Autistic Society is celebrating another 'first' after nine of its clients received their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
To gain their bronze awards the group, who all have autism, had to take part in a two day, one night expedition and over three month periods they developed new skills and took part in volunteering and physical activities.
Because all those taking part have autism the programme had to be specially adapted to suit their individual communication needs.
The nine who received awards were Matthew Ashcroft, Anthony Campbell, Allan Davies, Stephen Harrison, Jamie Hill, Stephen Hyde, Martin Jones, Stephen Quinn and Joe Wharton.
Kevin Mulligan, centre leader said: “We are really proud of all the guys. For some completing the scheme meant staying away from home for the first time which they coped with really well. Everyone developed new skills and improved overall levels of fitness."
