Council’s housing team among top in the country for helping Wirral's struggling families
NEW figures show Wirral Council is one of the top in the country for helping struggling families stay in their own homes.
Its Housing Options team administers the national Mortgage Rescue Scheme supporting those struggling to pay their mortgage and at risk becoming homeless.
Official figures show the authority is 22nd on a list of 325 for the number of mortgage rescues completed.
Since the scheme was introduced in 2009, the team has advised hundreds of households threatened with repossession and provided financial advice through its partnership with Wirral Citizens' Advice Bureau.
It also works with local housing associations to enable people to stay living in their own homes.
Cllr George Davies, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Engagement, said: "Many families get into financial trouble through no fault of their own, and the advice of the Housing Options Team has prevented homelessness and enabled people to stay in their homes, or to move on in a planned way.
"I would like to thank all of the officers involved in this work who provide support and advice at what can be a very stressful time, and also thank the registered social landlords and Wirral Citizens Advice Bureau for supporting the programme. We couldn’t do it without them."
Since the scheme began, Wirral has managed to complete a total of 41 Mortgage Rescues with another four currently progressing.
They have also assisted with numerous mortgage enquiries, all of which received advice and assistance, and all were referred for money advice (if not already receiving this) to the Citizens Advice Bureau.
