A COMMUNITY-led archaeology project in Bromborough has unearthed what is believed to be the first evidence of Roman occupation in the area.

Discovering Bromborough was organized by award-winning Social Enterprise Big Heritage, who alongside post-graduates from the University of Chester have been digging test-pits throughout the Village since the end of June.

Despite being only half-way though, the finds so far have excited experts which have been described as ‘unusual’ for this part of the UK.

Pieces of what are believed to be domestic drinking vessels have already been found, suggesting settlement as opposed to someone just passing through.

Project co-ordinator Jo Kirton said “This is the first Roman pottery to come out of Bromborough.

“We’ve managed to trace human activity much further back however as a number of prehistoric chert tools have also been discovered, dating back some 5000 years.”

Big Heritage founder, Dean Paton said: “This project has been supported by Heritage Lottery Fund money, which first and foremost is about bringing communities together to explore their shared past.

“We’ve had volunteers who’ve only lived in the UK for six months working together with residents who’ve been living in the village for over 70 years, it’s a stunning example of archaeology bringing people together.

“The fact that the finds have been so significant only adds to the impact of this project.”

The project is still open for volunteers to take part, with details of signing up and exclusive news from finds can be found on the project’s facebook page www.facebook.com/BigHeritage
