A WIRRAL musician who fought a successful battle with cancer has organised a concert to raise funds for research into the disease.

The Folk Blues and Bluegrass concert, taking place at The Knockaloe Concert Hall in Bridle Road, Bromborough a week on Friday, April 12, is the idea of Moreton-based singer/songwriter Steve Barker.

Among the performers taking part are ward-winning bluegrass guitarist and entertainer Chris Moreton and BBC folk award finalists Jaywalkers.

There will also be turns from Wirral’s Phil Chisnall Band, The Harbour Moon Men - led by Paul Reaney and what promises to be rip-roaring shanties from the Port Sunlight Sea Dogs.

Proceeds will go to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Steve, 64, from Moreton, had  Non-Hodkins Lymphoma and was successfully treated at Arrowe Park Hospital and the Liverpool Royal Liverpool over an 18-month period.

The singer/songwriter is currently "in remission" and decided to fundraise for the charity.

He will compere and host next week's concert and a charity CD will be released on the night.

He told the Globe: "Raising funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research will help save people and releive the stress and auguish caused to family and friends.

"Raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research means better treatments and cures for patients with blood cancer. The equation is simple, the more money raised equals more lives saved."

Catriona Tait, northwest regional fundraising manager for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: “The concert and CD is a fantastic way to help find better treatments and cures for all blood cancers."
