Jobless total increases in Wirral
Latest figures show the number of Wirral people claiming Jobseekers Allowance has increased.
More than 8,500 are now claiming the allowance compared with 8,292 in January and 7,859 the previous month.
Birkenhead saw the biggest increase with 122 extra claimants, taking the total figure to 3,555, while Wallasey had an increase of 101 to 2,816.
Wirral West had a small rise of 10 taking the total to 1,037 but five fewer people signed in Wirral South where there were 1,112 claimants.
Across the North West, unemployment has risen in the first quarter of the year by 3,000 to 301,000.
Analysis of the latest figures by the think tank IPPR North shows an imbalance between the employment prospects in the South and the North.
Yorkshire & the Humber saw jobless numbers increase by 3,000 to 246,000, the North East's figure was up by 4,000 to 127,000 on the previous quarter, while in London unemployment is down by 17,000 to 365,000.
IPPR North director Ed Cox said:“The rise in unemployment in northern regions make it clear that we are a long way off any sense of recovery outside London and yet there is such potential in Northern towns and cities.
"Budget announcements about regional growth and infrastructure investment are too little too late.
"We need a much more comprehensive and rapid response to the Heseltine and Northern Economic Futures Commission reports starting April 2013 - not April 2015.”

Why did Angela Eagle Wallasey Labour MP abstain? Are Labour part of the coalition or do they object to the £71 per week JSA claimants make whilst they claim £5.8 million in catering subsidies.
Watch Spiritof45 by Ken Loach director it might give you hope and direction for the next election. Cigarette paper is our only choice now because that's all that separates them.

Well that's the staff of the likes of HMV which have unfortunately closed their doors.
Birkenhead town center is becoming a bit of a ghost town in part due to the sheer lack of open shops. The town needs a massive investment to reboot its fortunes. The Grange and Pyramids are a myriad of shuttered shops and until something is done to arrest the current decline, more people will find their way onto the jobless queue. Wasn't that Mary Portas tasked to improve high street fortunes or does she only go five minutes up from London??
