A suspected wartime explosive discovered at a house in Pensby this afternoon has been X-rayed and found to be safe.

It has been removed by the Ministry of Defence bomb squad for further examination.

A full search of the house is still going on.

Merseyside Police closed Hillfield Drive as a precaution while  the house was searched.

The alarm was raised at 1.20pm by an employee of a cleaning firm who was emptying the house, which had belonged to an elderly man who had recently died.

The cleaner reported finding a "suspicious device" in a downstairs room and immediately called police.

Following preliminary examinations by specialist officers from the force's Matrix unit, a decision was taken to call out the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from the MoD.

Hillfield Drive and several nearby roads were cordoned off while the device was examined.
