AS winter returned to Wirral this week a council-run campaign is urging the public to keep warm and well during the colder months.

"Stay Safe and Warm" offers advice on keeping warm and well. It also offers information on fire awareness, including advice on fire safety and using electric blankets safely.

More than 130 people visited the council’s stand in Birkenhead Market last week, some of whom received free electric blankets to replace those they owned that were found to be faulty after testing.

Advice was provided by the council and partner agencies including the Fire Safety Network and Age UK.

Councillor George Davies, Wirral's cabinet member for housing and community safety, dropped into the event during the afternoon, and said it had been a great success, both in raising awareness of how to keep warm and well during winter, and promoting fire safety.

"I was really pleased to hear how many people the advisors spoke to, and how many left contact details for further information. It is clear that this event really made a difference.

"I would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success, including our colleagues in other agencies.

"Keeping healthy and happy in winter is not just about keeping warm, but about staying safe and well too, and this event has clearly reached a lot of people with some useful help and advice".
