Drama at the Pier Head as elderly man is rescued from River Mersey
AN elderly man rescued alive from the River Mersey this afternoon died later in hospital.
Crews were called out at 1.37pm to the old landing stage on Princes Parade at the Pier Head following reports of a man in the water.
Merseyside fire service launched its rescue boat and recovered the man from underneath the landing stage.
The victim was unconscious and the crew carried out CPR while he was transported to the dockside, where he received further urgent medical attention.
It is not clear how the man came to be in the river.
He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where he later died.
A police spokesman said: "At this point there has been no formal identification but it is believed he was in his 80s.
"A post mortem will be carried out to establish a cause of death, which is not thought to be suspicious at this time."
Anyone with information should call Merseyside Police on 101.
