British Transport Police have confirmed a man lost his life after being struck by a train on the Northern Line this morning.

The incident took place at Merseyrail's Waterloo station in Sefton.

A BTP spokesman said officers joined Merseyside Police at the incident, which was reported at 9.06am. 

Medics from North West Ambulance Service were called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now working to establish the full circumstances including how the man came to be on the tracks.

Enquiries are also ongoing to discover the identity of the deceased and inform his family.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

A shuttle train service is running between Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross. Journey times will be extended by up to 30 minutes.

Seven rail replacement buses are in operation between Sandhills and Hall Road stations.

Merseyrail says there is no estimate for when normal service will resume.
