A WIRRAL pensioner was found dead following a blaze at her home.

The incident happened at around 6pm, on Monday, in Lloyd Drive, Greasby.

The woman, who was in her 80s, was found collapsed inside the house.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate her but she was later pronounced dead.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue station manager Mark Clarke, who attended the incident, said: “Firefighters entered the property and brought a lady out...and attempted to revive her with CPR and a defibrillator until the arrival of paramedics.

“Sadly, the lady was later pronounced dead.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.

Fire fighting operations had finished by around 6.50pm, while damping down continued up to 9pm.

The scene has been cordoned off for examination and house-to-house enquiries are ongoing.

A post-mortem examination to establish cause of death is expected to take place today.

Police say a formal identification is yet to be made. The victim's next of kin are in the process of being contacted.
