A WIRRAL nurse is hoping to boost awareness of the life-threatening disease Tuberculosis.
Lesley Brogelli, lead nurse for the TB nursing service at Arrowe Park, has organised a charity night to mark World TB Day next month.
The event will include performances from local musicians, with all funds being donated to TB Alert.
Lesley said: “Year after year I spend World TB Day in supermarkets handing out leaflets to increase public knowledge of this terrible disease and I’m always met with the same astonished reaction because people think tuberculosis was eradicated about 50 years ago.
“I get the same response when I tell people that I’m a specialist TB Nurse. They tell me that my job can’t be very busy because there’s so little TB about. It’s a complete fallacy. We’ve never been busier.
“We’re seeing more cases each year and every case has to be followed up and many involve us in a massive amount of contact tracing.”
There were 822 cases of TB in the North West in 2011 - a rate of 11.9 cases per 100,000 of population and the largest figure since enhanced TB Surveillance was introduced in 1999.
Lesley’s awareness event will be held on Saturday, March 23, at the Wro Lounge, Wro Loft and Wro Bar in West Kirby.
Tickets are £20 each and include a complimentary drink on arrival and canapés, while chips and dips will be provided during the course of the evening.
There will also be a disco with live Frank Sinatra tribute slots. For more information, call Lesley on 07717 376 462 or the Wro Lounge on 0151 625 2010.
